TerraFirma Case Study
Smith Rock Pedestrian Bridge Replacement
Challenge
Built 50 years ago and reconstructed 30 years ago, the old bridge at Smith Rock State Park in Terrabonne, Oregon needed updates to accommodate visitors and first responders during the park’s frequent rescue operations. This project was scheduled for September 22, 2023, to remove the old bridge and replace it with a new, wider pedestrian bridge.
Solution
As part of the replacement, new bridge abutments were designed to be supported by driven pipe piles. The general contractor used a crane to lift one of TerraFirma’s mini excavators over the river so the team could use it and a hydraulic breaker with a special attachment to drive the 3” pipe pile.
